From one step to the next ... Retired tailor Joseph Schwartz strolls along a street in Chicago one ordinary day in 1949 - and from one second to the next is in a completely different place at a completely different time. After a long and desperate search he finally meets people, but he cannot communicate with them. The strangers consider him mentally retarded and involuntarily subject Schwartz to an experiment designed to make him smarter.
