Sweden, around 1900: After the death of their parents, the three sisters Elin, Kirsten and Sofia find life on their farm dull and grey. Elin, who keeps a dark secret in her heart, sets all her hopes on a new beginning with relatives in America. Together with her sisters, she sets off on a dangerous journey into the new world.
