Term paper from 2015 in the field of Economics - Labor Market Economics, grade: 10 points, language: German.

Abstract: China's population grew from 582 million in 1953 to just over one billion in 1982. Experts predicted overpopulation, famines, and uprisings. To halt this development, the one-child policy was introduced in 1979. After more than three decades, the government decided in late October 2015 to abandon this policy and allow each woman to have two children. So what has happened in the meantime? On one hand, the average number of children per woman has decreased from 6 to a fertility rate of 1.55. On the other hand, China has aged. About 30% of the 1.3 billion inhabitants are over 50 years old. China is now experiencing demographic change. In addition to the far-reaching social problems attributed to the one-child policy, the consequences for the Chinese economy are significant and are beginning to manifest. The number of people of working age fell for the first time in 2012 by about 3 million, marking a turning point in the Chinese labor market.
