The volume brings together a range of prominent sources from all periods of history. Through textual sources, historical images, and maps, it illustrates the opportunities and often underutilized potentials that lie in an intensive engagement with the production, function, and impact of these sources. It makes visible the processes of canonization through enrichment, transformation, and loss of meaning, as well as intermediality, which ultimately lead to a key role in stabilizing certain memory contents. In contrast, these attributions of authenticity and symbolic power often do not withstand critical source interpretation.
