In these beautifully told, unsentimental memories, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for the meaning of his life as a biracial American. It begins in New York when Barack Obama learns that his father—more a myth than a man to him—has died in a car accident. This sudden death triggers an odyssey of emotions. It first leads him to a small town in Kansas, from where he follows the traces of his mother's family on the journey to Hawaii. Then to Kenya, where he encounters the African side of his family and confronts the bitter truth about his father's life. Ultimately, it leads to a reconciliation with his divided heritage.
