Sandstones, clay slates, and greywackes were formed in the Devonian Sea 400 million years ago, which now make up the Rhine Slate Mountains. They are remnants of an alpine-like high mountain range that once stretched from present-day Great Britain to the Ore Mountains. It took 50 million years for it to be weathered and eroded during the Upper Carboniferous period. Massive stromatopore and coral reefs grew in this sea, forming limestones in which groundwater created extensive cave systems. A landscape that promises many adventures today.
