Product details

The book focuses on the painters Anton Burger (1824-1905) and Hugo Kauffmann (1844-1915), two genre painters whose styles and themes of rural life connect to the Dutch masters of the 17th century. During his lifetime, Burger was very popular among the citizens of Frankfurt for his regional depictions. Hugo Kauffmann also achieved great success with his often humorous portrayals of Bavarian rural life in dimly lit farmhouses and lively inns, featuring distinctive protagonists. He is considered one of the best figure and genre painters of his time, known for his often tiny paintings on wood. After initial instruction from his father, Hermann Kauffmann, Hugo Kauffmann began his studies at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt under the genre and landscape painter Jakob Becker (1810-1872), similar to Anton Burger. From 1863 to 1871, Kauffmann attended the studio of the significantly older Burger in Kronberg. He then moved to Munich before settling in Prien am Chiemsee in 1872, where he became the founder of a daughter colony of the artist colony established on Fraueninsel in Chiemsee since 1828. A significant artist colony also developed in the Taunus town of Kronberg, located just outside Frankfurt, with Anton Burger's establishment there in 1858.
