I view gestalt therapeutic theory and practice as a living system. Only when we, as gestalt therapists and theorists, engage dialogically, only when we open ourselves to dialogue with patients, with other systems of thought and methods, and when we respond to the changing conditions in the world, can we foster understanding. Theory as dialogue is the systematic intellectual foundation of our clinical practice. Dialogical theory is a way to support the therapeutic relationship and the experimental approach. Both the therapeutic relationship and experimentation are seen as dialogue in gestalt therapeutic theory. Theory is a written and systematically rational accounting. Theory arises from human relationships. Gary Yontef's book is the most significant addition to the gestalt therapy literature in the last twenty years and will undoubtedly become a foundational text in all gestalt therapy training programs.
