The sixth volume of the adventure story about the adventurer Corto Maltese spans over two years: from 1918 to 1920. Corto arrives in Hong Kong and joins an organization called "Red Lanterns." In their name, he undertakes a risky yet rewarding mission in Manchuria and Siberia. Red and white Russians, Japanese, Chinese warlords, Mongols, Americans, Entente troops, and even the Czechoslovakians compete for control of these lands. Despite the dangers, Corto pursues his goal and encounters fascinating historical figures such as the Bloody Baron von Ungern, the Cossack Ataman Semjonow, and the Chinese General Zhang Zuolin. He also meets a long-lost friend.
