On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth, Augustin Keller's life's work is examined anew by various authors. As a person, Keller stands both for the dawn of the liberal state in the mid-19th century and for a deeply moral-religious social attitude. Even today, his speeches on the abolition of the monasteries (1841) and the expulsion of the Jesuits (1844) or his plea for equal rights for the Jews (1862) are still impressive. His popular enlightenment and church-critical convictions were combined with a privately and publicly presented moral claim to the good in people.
