Heligoland

The most remarkable island, however, is Helgoland, noted the chronicler Adam of Bremen as early as 1080. Not only the impressive Red Rock, but also its location far out at sea and its tumultuous history have always made the island something truly special. In the 19th century, it was a popular seaside resort, and in the 20th century, it also became a destination for weekend and day visitors. Even today, tens, if not hundreds of thousands, flock to the rocky island to experience the uniqueness of the storm-battered isle, to enjoy a boat trip, or to shop duty-free. Most know little about the island's tumultuous history and what offerings await them on Helgoland. This reading and travel book aims to tell visitors about the incredibly diverse history and present of Helgoland. Missionaries and pirates visited the island; Frisians, Danes, Britons, French, and Hanseatic merchants.
