Based On A True Story

RothStauffenberg's work revolves around the cinematic space. They deconstruct the gaze into lines of sight, into virtual maps, and propose invisible connections and potential links. Most of the time, these are real film sets, visible only through a window, where light, sound, and music change. Like films compressed in time, but without actors and without a plot. Gilles Deleuze speaks of 'arbitrary spaces' in his movement-images, as mere places of possibilities. RothStauffenberg discuss these 'fictions' with the North Korean-born filmmaker Shin Jun-chul. The 70-year-old Shin now lives in Mozambique, where he moved after independence in 1977 to help establish the new cinema. In 2007, RothStauffenberg held a masquerade ball at the 'Grande Hotel' in Beira, Mozambique, and made a film there. Once 'the pride of Africa,' over 3,000 people now live there.
