Black Diaspora and Germany

This book provides insights into the experiences of the Black diaspora in Germany and the connections of the international Black diaspora with Germany. The topics range from the 18th century to the present and are situated within social history, as well as literature, art, and pop culture. Political initiatives are given space alongside theoretical reflections, historical overviews, and case studies. The relationship between "Black German Studies" and "Critical Whiteness Studies" is discussed in relation to hegemonic traditions of scholarship, as well as issues of racism and nation, and from colonial history to later developments. Other topics include the intersectionality of 'race', class, and gender, as well as the position of Black actors in the cultural sector amidst commodification, performativity, and subversion. The contributions include essays from history and cultural studies.
