Hamsun's perhaps most important novel: In the small Norwegian port town, Johan Nilsen Nagel was an exotic figure from day one. He had come and stayed, and no one knew why. He wears bright yellow suits and sends himself telegrams. But he astounds the locals not only with such eccentricities: he courts a woman no longer young and simultaneously falls in love with the beautiful daughter of the pastor.
