A life made up of thousands of puzzle pieces. "She was as complicated as a puzzle made of thousands of pieces - and I had to find and fit those pieces together," writes Angelika Schrobsdorff about her mother. The pieces she uses are letters, photo albums, memories from friends, and the shared life they lived together later on. It all began in harmony in a wealthy Jewish merchant house in early 20th century Berlin. Else Kirschner, bursting with charm, with dark curls and bright eyes, loved her caring parents, and she loved the life that brought her years of prosperity, filled with theater and concerts, vacations at the summer house by the lake, and great passions. But the Nazis abruptly put an end to that. Else, now married to the Prussian nobleman Erich Schrobsdorff, flees with her two children.
