DSR - Deutsche Seereederei Rostock

After the post-war period saw a gradual revival of maritime trade, the People's Chamber of the GDR decided in August 1950 to establish its own merchant fleet. The first ship, a small steamer named Johann Ahrens, was initially assigned to the German Shipping and Handling Operations Central in Berlin, which was primarily engaged in inland shipping. With the founding of the Deutsche Seereederei Rostock on July 1, 1952, the maritime trade of the GDR was finally consolidated under this company. This comprehensive book provides fascinating insights into the history of the DSR and the development of East German shipping. For the first time, the focus is primarily on the ships of the Deutsche Seereederei Rostock and their uniform representation—both in terms of the 1:1250 scale drawings and the technical data, which are presented precisely and accompanied by a clear IMO number. In addition to drawings of each ship type, there are also statistical information on fleet development, ship lists, and explanations of the technical data. The book, written in both German and English, is supplemented by explanations regarding the significance of the ship names.
