Abstract: The drug war has escalated in Mexico, leading to the emergence of a new genre in literary studies called Narcoliterature. This genre is also addressed by the Mexican author Yuri Herrera, who grew up in the border city of Juárez (Mexico), where the extent of the drug war is particularly evident. His novella "Trabajos del Reinö" tells the story of the phenomenon of drug cartels in Mexico. Currently, Narcocorridos are more popular in Mexico than ever before. These songs boast of wealth, power, and women, enticing hopeless young Mexicans to join the illegal activities of the cartels. There is little consideration of the possible consequences and repercussions of entering a drug cartel. Yuri Herrera focuses on these consequences by depicting life within a drug cartel. This thesis examines how Yuri Herrera manages to portray life in a cartel, despite the increasing number of members, through the deliberate, ostentatious external representation of organized crime as a place of danger and negative influence on its members.
