Drawings. Catalogue Raisonné Volume 6: 1972-1979

The period covered by Volume 6 of our Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings marks a turning point in the career of Cy Twombly (1928-2011). Between 1972 and 1979, encounters, purchases by renowned museums, and especially exhibitions take place that catapult him to the top ranks of the international art scene: His paper works are shown in New York, Rome, and Basel, he is represented at the Venice Biennale with a cycle of drawings, he meets Heiner Bastian, who publishes the first monograph of his drawings in Berlin, and he encounters Roland Barthes, who will write important texts for and about him. Twombly retreats from his ever-growing fame by purchasing an old estate in Bassano in Teverina near Bomarzo, where he sets up a studio and works on his large painting cycles, always accompanied by drawings, away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Our volume includes famous works such as "Mars and the Artist," "Bassano in Teverina," and the series on Greek gods like Pan, Venus, and Apollo. It is also during this time that his highly acclaimed "24 Short Pieces" (1973), a set of partly colored drawings, is created.
