The common ecology focuses on technical environmental protection: where emissions are too high, they are reduced through corresponding innovations. However, this does not change the prevailing structure. Deep ecology, on the other hand, questions the deeper causes of the ecological crisis and challenges the modern view of humanity, which places humans at the center of the world, isolated from all other life surrounding them. In contrast, deep ecologists propose the idea of the "ecological self," which is connected to all living beings and recognizes that humans are the Earth, the ecosystem, Gaia. Jochen Kirchhoff articulates an integral deep ecology. Integral refers, on the one hand, to the existence of higher (i.e., integral) levels and stages of consciousness, and on the other hand, to the necessary integration of the Earth within humans, that is, of the soil, the plant kingdom, and the animal kingdom.
