Dostoevsky was closely connected to Germany throughout his life. His travels took him to Wiesbaden, Baden-Baden, Dresden, Bad Homburg, and Bad Ems. His stays, some lasting several months, were reflected in his novels, diaries, and letters. In Wiesbaden, he wrote "Crime and Punishment" and at times subsisted almost entirely on tea. In Dresden, he was captivated by the art gallery, and in the casinos of Baden-Baden and Bad Homburg, he squandered his last money. We experience the great Russian author as a spa guest seeking relaxation, as a passionate lover, and as a man trapped in his gambling addiction. Alongside this, a kind of cultural history of the glamorous spa and entertainment industry in 19th-century Germany emerges.
