In this study, the use of interpreters in the Vienna Women's Shelter Association and in the Vienna Intervention Center against Violence in the Family is examined scientifically. For this purpose, interpreting during counseling sessions is discussed at the beginning of the paper and the translational act in the psychosocial context is described. Furthermore, the function of the interpreter is examined in more detail and theories and approaches that originate both from interpreting science and from the field of intercultural psychotherapy are used as a basis for the considerations. The focus of this work is on the different roles of an interpreter in this setting as well as her influence on a counseling interview and the resulting change in the communication situation.
