The art academies in Florence and Düsseldorf have produced a multitude of significant artists throughout their history. The list of their members reads like a "Who's Who" of art history. In a two-volume set, 137 artists from Michelangelo to the present day demonstrate the diverse nature of the artistic development process. The oldest art academy in the world, the Florentine Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, and the art academy in Düsseldorf, one of the most internationally innovative training centers for visual arts, jointly address the question of the diversity of artistic becoming and the role of academies as places of art promotion. While the "Florence" volume spans the historical arc from the founding of the academy in 1563 to the present day, the "Düsseldorf" volume focuses on post-war modernism and contemporary art – 500 exciting years of art as a path of human understanding.
