In Paul, there is a programmatic rejection of rhetoric, which could be part of a dissimulatio artis (concealment of one's own rhetorical skill) and thus itself a rhetorical device. The present study introduces the dissimulatio artis in Greek-Roman literature in detail for the first time, explores analogies in Paul and the rest of the New Testament, and outlines the development of early Christian rhetoric. A contribution by Ulrich Zalewski addresses possible Old Testament and early Jewish roots.
