In June 1988, the heads of state of Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia met in Algiers to discuss the establishment of the Arab Maghreb Union. The Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) was founded in February 1989 in Marrakech with the approval of the treaty for its establishment. In approving the treaty, the member states agreed to coordinate, harmonize, and streamline their policies and strategies to achieve sustainable development in all areas of human activity. In addition to the treaty, the Marrakech summit adopted the solemn declaration for the establishment of the UMA and its work program. The objectives of the Arab Maghreb Union are: to strengthen the fraternal ties that connect the member states and their peoples; to achieve progress and prosperity for their societies and defend their rights; to contribute to the maintenance of peace based on justice; and to gradually work towards free movement of people as well as the transfer of services, goods, and capital among them.
