The feud between the Swabian League of Cities and Duke Ulrich of Württemberg in 1519, along with the love affair between the young nobleman Georg von Sturmfeder and Marie von Lichtenstein, are the two themes of this spectacular regional and historical novel: a gripping tale of knights and love that claims historical truth. Wilhelm Hauff created with this work - modeled after Sir Walter Scott - the first German historical novel, influencing writers such as C. F. Meyer, Gustav Freytag, and Joseph Victor von Scheffel. The novel, first published in 1826, received such a strong public response that Count Wilhelm of Württemberg had the Lichtenstein Castle above the Echaz Valley rebuilt in 1840/41 based on the literary model.
