Mindfulness as a perception attitude and method for stress reduction has been a widely discussed topic in psychological research for several years. However, there is a lack of a clear definition and distinct differentiation from related concepts and the everyday use of the term. Many theories and traditions contain mindfulness characteristics without explicitly labeling them as such. To make mindfulness concepts usable for educational and psychological contexts, a clear basis for communication is needed. Janike Tammena investigates what exactly lies behind the term mindfulness. She highlights parallels between mindfulness in Buddhism, in Western philosophies, and in psychological research, and summarizes the fundamental cross-traditional and cross-theoretical dimensions in a mindfulness model. Through interviews with consultants, she ultimately demonstrates which of these mindfulness dimensions are present in professional counseling processes and what possibilities a mindful attitude and relationship-building hold for educational and psychological contexts.
