Today, private actors often take over government tasks, from security checks at airports to the market approval of products to the accommodation of asylum seekers. Has this always been the case? Why do they do it? Who benefits from it? And which legal rules apply to private actors: those for the state or the general rules for citizens and companies? Volume 1 of the research project 'State Tasks, Private Actors' offers an introduction to the topic from a historical, economic and political science perspective as well as a legal analysis of the areas of rule formation, service provision, knowledge acquisition, evaluation and control.
