The authors take the health insurance association Santésuisse as an example to address the question of effective and efficient management of non-profit organizations (NPO). Furthermore, they make a cross-comparison with the Swiss Insurance Association (SSV), an association of similar structure and importance as Santésuisse. Since associations are legally treated as associations, the definition of statutes in general and the organization of association governance in particular are only marginally regulated. This makes it all the more important to identify the factors that are relevant for success in cooperation within the board and between the board and management. By empirically analyzing the personal self-evaluation of a board of directors for the first time, the authors close a research gap in the NPO literature. They systematically evaluate their findings from numerous structured interviews and use them to derive practice-relevant action guidelines for the successful management or good governance of an association, organized into the action areas 'leadership and strategy', 'structure and culture', 'business processes', 'board committees and conflicts of interest', and 'role understanding and self-evaluation'. The work is intended to show how the governance mechanisms of associations can be simplified and refined on the one hand, and how performance can be measurably improved on the other.
