The European Union is embedded in a wide circle of organizations. Intensified cooperation in the form of sectoral agreements such as the EU-Switzerland agreement, the SAA, the Eastern Partnership, the EU-Turkey Association Agreement, and the Union for the Mediterranean completes the picture.

Central policy areas are now "Europeanized" and can no longer be understood without knowledge of the relevant EU law.
