The increasing exchange between cultures, the advancing technical development and the high mobility of the population increase the multifaceted interactions of law and culture and raise the demands on the cultural competence of lawyers. How and to what extent should cultural values be taken into account in law and to what extent should law help to shape culture and art? Starting from the premise that law is situated in cultural contexts, must take different cultures into account, and sometimes transcends cultural boundaries, this volume brings together current contributions by members of the mid-level faculty and professors of the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich from the fields of international law, constitutional law, criminal law, contract law, intellectual property law, and legal history. Based on Swiss and international law, the topics addressed include cultural identity, linguistic diversity, the handling of cultural diversity, the protection of cultural assets, the promotion of culture, and the mutual influence of legal cultures. Critical and solution-oriented, the authors offer ways in which culture and the arts can be taken into account in law and how culturally competent action and research is possible in the field of law.
