Increasingly, our daily lives are permeated by connected devices and the Internet of Things. This connectivity not only opens up new usage possibilities but also makes the user dependent on the provider's will when using the device. The provider can lock the device by blocking the integrated software or denying access to the cloud. In this way, they can turn a high-tech device into electronic waste. In many cases, contract law applies in these situations. But what if there is no contract between the user and the provider? In this case, the user relies on protection through possession or ownership. To what extent digital, that is, software- or network-based usage is subject to such protection is addressed by Konrad Duden in the present study.
