Digitale Modellbahn selbstgebaut
German, Gustav Wostrack, 2019Product details
Use of Espressif ESP32 boards and Arduino - Controller Area Network (CAN) as a bus system for model railway control. An extremely adaptable system, compatible with the Märklin standard, cost-effective, and expandable. For beginners: instructions with plug connections and pre-made software. For advanced users: soldering and custom programming.
The book guides aspiring and experienced model railway enthusiasts in building a digital model railway that is adaptable to individual preferences, compatible with the Märklin standard, expandable, and affordable. The author emphasizes explaining the functionality and structure of the digital control of the railway. All components communicate via the CAN bus (Controller Area Network), which is also used by Märklin.
The author refers to his modules as CANgurus: these are functional blocks of hardware and software for controlling the digital model railway. They can control rolling stock like locomotives, as well as switches or signals. CANGurus utilize ESP32 modules that communicate via ESPNow – an independent, WLAN-like protocol. This significantly simplifies the setup of the system by eliminating a large part of the wiring.
The modules are programmed in C++ and utilize the many libraries and macros from the Arduino world. Throughout the chapters, the reader builds nearly all the components necessary for controlling a railway. Two components are purchased ready-made: the Märklin track box and a control program, preferably WinDigiPet, which is then used to control the railway from a PC.
Further hardware can be soldered for maximum customization of the model railway to personal preferences. Some components can also be easily set up and tested on small breadboards without a soldering iron. The book also explains programming. Those who lack the time or desire to create programs can use the existing ones.
