Product details

Hermeneutics is the art and theory of understanding. However, how does this art change when new methods and practices come into play under digital conditions, and traditional approaches undergo significant transformations? What consequences must be drawn for theory when understanding occurs in the form of algorithms? Around 1800, Friedrich Schleiermacher advocated for romantic hermeneutics with the principle that the reader should understand the text better than the author. But what happens when both authors and readers are machines and their texts consist of more than just letters? This volume demonstrates how scholars in the humanities and social sciences perceive this situation as both a challenge and an opportunity to learn to understand differently with technology.
