The Diercke Primary School Atlas Switzerland helps pupils to practise using an atlas and to extract specific information from it. Different representations of the earth's surface are presented in maps and plans and are combined with a systematic introduction to the elements of a map (scale, signatures, colouring, height layering, sky direction, etc.). The children learn to orientate themselves first in their immediate surroundings (classroom, place of residence, etc.). Once these basic skills of map work have been learned, typical Swiss regions and landscape types can be compared. However, the atlas also contains topic-specific and historical maps of Switzerland as well as maps of Europe and the world. References are made to the pupils' living environment and the skills acquired can be applied in concrete situations such as the common.
