Residential construction represents the first and most beautiful architectural challenge for Diener & Diener Architects. Their projects in this area have served as a true research subject for 40 years. This book presents them comprehensively for the first time and discusses their urban planning and architectural characteristics. The authors had access to many documents from the office, including the collected lectures of Roger Diener. The authors have a particular interest in typological design, which underlies the projects. This involves updating a few fundamental types under the given conditions of a task, highlighting the significance of the projects for contemporary residential construction. The firm was founded in 1942 by Marcus Diener and, before Roger Diener joined in 1978, built several thousand apartments in the Basel region. These projects form the prehistory of the work of Diener & Diener Architects, which is also presented for the first time in the book.
