This publication contains all the papers presented during the cooperation event of the Society for German Studies with the East-West College of the Federal Agency for Civic Education, held from October 22 to 25, 1997, in Brühl. It also includes some contributions that provide meaningful and necessary content additions.

Overall, the articles offer an overview of selected economic structures and economic structure problems in the two German states. Not only is there a periodization of the economy in the GDR, but also an economic historical analysis that integrates the GDR's economy into international division of labor. Reparations payments in the Soviet Zone/GDR and West Germany are explained in previously unknown detail. The upheavals in the GDR at the end of the 1980s, as well as the establishment and problems of economic and social structures in the new federal states after German reunification in 1990, are also taken into account. In addition to general structural problems in large contexts (e.g., the electricity industry in the new federal states), regional issues are also adequately addressed (e.g., population development and settlement structural consequences in Thuringia, problems of regional development in the Lower Saxony border zone before and after reunification).
