The novel was published in 1981 and is based on an experiment conducted in 1967 by the history teacher Ron Jones at a Californian high school. Chapter by chapter, the reader is guided through the plot of the novel and gradually gets to know the various characters. A diagram on a double-page spread begins after reading the first chapter and is supplemented with further information about the characters as the reader progresses. In between, readers are given writing tasks in which they slip into the role of one of the main characters and write a diary entry from their point of view, for example.
