Die Welfen

The exciting history of this outstanding European dynasty in the Early Modern Period begins with the emergence of the three Welf principalities of Calenberg-Göttingen-Grubenhagen, Lüneburg, and Wolfenbüttel, along with their residences in Hanover, Celle, and Wolfenbüttel. The rulers of Wolfenbüttel gained great renown as patrons beyond the borders of their territory. The line residing in Hanover made a return to the European stage and to former greatness with the acquisition of the electoral dignity in 1692 and the assumption of the British throne from 1714 onwards. However, the promotion of science, art, and economy, as well as the varied history of the Welf territories, are also extensively covered. In the German Empire, the family retained its social significance. With the downfall of the Duchy of Brunswick in 1918 amidst the turmoil of the revolution, Welf rule came to an end.
