Kafka completed the writing of this "little story," which he once referred to as "exceptionally disgusting," on the night of December 6 to December 7, 1912. He meticulously describes the consequences of the traveling salesman Gregor Samsa's transformation into a creature, thus exploring various elements of the counter-world of humanity. Rejected by Neue Rundschau in 1914, this "bug story" - as publisher Kurt Wolff called it - was first published in 1915 in the October issue of Weisse Blätter and later that same year as a standalone print for the Last Judgment. Today, it is an indispensable part of the German curriculum. The afterword of this edition includes notes on Kafka's life and work as well as linguistic explanations.
