Die undankbare Fremde

Amusing, spirited, and wonderfully unfair. Time. In search of a better world, a young girl finds herself in Switzerland in 1968, the land of hard cheese, where she learns in her language course that she shouldn't talk nonsense. Home is where you can complain, but here she is expected to be grateful. The new environment feels cumbersome and distant to her; she rebels against the host country that forces her to abide by its rules and doesn't allow her to be herself. However, she also encounters many other castaways who hope to make something of their lives: petty thieves, the depressed, tricksters, war refugees, the exploited, the overly adapted, and the naive. And she learns to experience exile and foreignness as a wealth, becoming a bridge builder between cultures.
