Product details
This edition includes 18 stories by Wolfgang Borchert. Borchert (1921-1947) was a German writer. His slim body of work, consisting of short stories, poems, and a play, made Borchert one of the most well-known authors of rubble literature after World War II. His homecoming drama 'Draussen vor der Tür' resonated with large segments of the German audience in the post-war period. After training as an actor and spending a few months in a touring theater, Borchert was drafted into the Wehrmacht for military service in 1941 and had to participate in the attack on the Soviet Union. At the front, he sustained severe injuries and infections. He was repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for criticizing the Nazi regime and for so-called undermining military morale. Even in the post-war period, Borchert suffered greatly from illnesses and liver damage. After brief attempts to return to acting and cabaret, he remained confined to his sickbed. Between January 1946 and September 1947, he wrote numerous short stories and completed the drama 'Draussen vor der Tür' in just eight days. He died at the age of 26 from the effects of his liver disease during a spa stay in Switzerland.
