If it weren't for the road to town, how boring life would be in the small, dirty nest! Sixteen-year-old Delia escapes almost daily from her mother, who constantly curses her children, and her father, who is always tense and angry, and takes the long way into town. There she sits on the park bench and looks at the women's dresses or walks with a friend under the arcades.
Azalea, the older sister, has made it: she has a husband, two children, a nanny, a fur coat and a lover. She spends her days in bed.
When Delia stays in the village, she meets Giulio, the son of the village doctor, who has fallen for Delia. She goes with him to the little pine grove. And then there is Nini, the cousin who lives in town and talks about his books and is the only one who takes Delia seriously.
