Münster Cathedral was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, the landmark of the bishop's city seemed lost forever. Whether the cathedral should be rebuilt at all, however, was not discussed - this was taken for granted. But how and with what? Even more than the lack of money and materials, the problem of the lack of craftsmen hampered the reconstruction. It was therefore decided to found a cathedral building lodge to train the necessary stonemasons themselves. The people of Münster and the entire diocese of Münster took a lively interest in the work up to the solemn rededication in 1956. The modern design of the west façade led to heated public debate. Numerous private photos of the stonemasons document the restoration of St Paul's Cathedral using medieval methods and classical stonemasonry techniques.
