Parrots, along with crows and woodpeckers, are among the most intelligent birds. In Europe, parrots are primarily known as talkative pets. Recent research shows that parrots can not only mimic sounds but also speak meaningfully. The most talented in this regard are the Amazons, macaws from South America, Australian cockatoos, and the African grey parrot. The speech ability of parrots, like that of humans, is based on tongue movements, meaning that sounds are not formed in the vocal organ. The author Karl Friedrich Otto Russ (1833-1899) was one of the most prominent authors of specialized books on birds, particularly on birdkeeping in the 19th century.
