Gerhard Rühm (* 1930) is considered one of the outstanding artistic personalities of the 20th and 21st centuries – as a writer, musician, and visual artist. The Austrian artist is a co-founder of the Vienna Group (H. C. Artmann, Oswald Wiener, among others). Throughout his entire body of work, Rühm has engaged with the auditory and visual dimensions of linguistic expression, developing new forms and concepts for theater (e.g., 'round or oval', 1954), radio plays (e.g., 'ophelia and the words', 1969), and prose (the 'frogs', 1958). The volume examines the specific mediality of individual works ('man and woman' as 'book theater' and the 'total book' 'rhythm r') as well as the genres of radiophonic poetry, typewriter texts, and artists' books. Cross-genre analyses of temporality, varieties of comedy, and the relationship between poetic theory and poetic practice point to aesthetic guidelines within Rühm's seven-decade-spanning oeuvre and lead to the center of his exceptional poetics. A survey of the estate collection opens up perspectives for further philological endeavors.
