In this classic of 20th-century philosophy, now available for the first time in German translation, Iris Murdoch reveals the shortcomings of analytical moral philosophy and calls for a change in direction. We cannot understand morality if we limit ourselves solely to scientific and linguistic philosophical methods. Engaging with Wittgenstein, Kant, Sartre, Weil, and Plato, Murdoch argues that morality is not about making rational decisions in a value-neutral world. Instead, it consists of orienting ourselves towards the objective idea of the Good, in selfless devotion and attentive observation of reality with the aim of doing it justice.
