Even as a student, Stefan Heym, the son of a Jewish merchant, wrote politically engaged poetry. For this, he was expelled from his hometown of Chemnitz by the Nazis. After graduating in Berlin, he fled to the USA via Prague, where he ran a newspaper and wrote his first novels. After fighting against the National Socialists as a soldier in the US Army with leaflets, he was also forced to leave his new home during the McCarthy era. He eventually found refuge, but also faced repression in East Germany. Until his death in 2001, he never allowed himself to be silenced and remained true to his convictions. This graphic novel captures the life and work of the significant German writer through expressive images and compelling texts.
