Product details

The Black Spider (published in 1842) is the most famous novella by Jeremias Gotthelf and a masterpiece of Biedermeier narrative literature. In this intricately structured novella with its complex narrative framework, a story about godlessness and superstition is told. Through two legendary flashbacks, a grandfather recounts the deadly rampage of a devilish spider and the salvation brought about by a Christian heroic spirit. The author's didactic intent is vividly illustrated through the genre-like depiction of village life and a linguistic power that unfolds the grotesque plot in all its fantasy.

Text in modern spelling. - With notes by Wolfgang Mieder.
