Background: With the changes in the design of modern buildings over the past 30 years, the cleaning effort has increased disproportionately compared to most other follow-up costs. There is a glaring lack of knowledge among builders, planners, and operators regarding the cleanability and cleaning of materials and the accessibility of areas to be cleaned. Objective: The fundamental knowledge necessary for strategic planning, construction, and operational decisions regarding economical and effective cleanability and cleaning across all lifecycle phases is presented in a clear and structured manner. Hypothesis: It is possible to formulate general planning principles for buildings in such a way that an economical cleaning process can be implemented. Furthermore, it is possible to establish general principles to optimize the cleaning process in existing buildings. Method: This work has been developed from the compilation of information based on personal experiences, case studies, and the transcription of relevant technical literature.
