How a new ethic of the Reformation - more one of the Calvinists and Puritans than of the Lutherans - produced a pursuit of profit that not only revolutionized all notions of work but also made the capitalism in which we now seem trapped possible, is the subject of Max Weber's most famous work. It argues far more subtly than is sometimes assumed and remains a prime example of interpretative religious sociology. The edition by Trier sociologist Andrea Maurer offers, in addition to the text, a significant preface written later, explanations of key concepts, references to literature, and a helpful afterword.
